Travelling by train
A while ago me and my boyfriend visited one of my closest friends, Verena, whom I had met while I lived in Finland. She lives in the mountains in Italy, which meant that we had a really exciting trip ahead of us! As soon as I started searching the internet for transport, I decided to look beyond airplane tickets. Italy is not that far away from the Netherlands, so I wanted to see if we could take a train or bus instead. And, as it turned out, WE COULD! So, a few days later, we packed our backpacks and went to Utrecht Centraal at 6 AM, where we would start our trip: Two trains into Germany (as we had one transfer) and then a bus into Italy.
At first, I was a little bit nervous to spend so much time on a train, as I normally have to pee quite a lot. I already imagined myself taking 10 trips to the toilet, stumbling and bumping around in it as the train would continue its journey. However, to my surprise, the toilets were quite amazing. They were big, clean, relatively close to where we were sitting, and quiet.
#WINNING!
We sat at Verena’s kitchen table at 22:00 that evening. This meant that the trip took us 13 hours from door to door. I think that is not bad at all! One big advantage of going by train is that you see so much more!! When you travel by airplane, you mainly see white clouds (which are beautiful though), but you see nothing from the countries you fly over. That is what I love about the train or bus: you experience every environment you go through.
Also, in the end, going by train was 10 euros cheaper than if we had gone by airplane! How cool is that? I know that travelling by train can be very expensive. But this trip proved that this is not always the case!
